Clark County students depict what home means to them in Housing Division’s 20th annual Where I Live School Arts Exhibition

Las Vegas, NV - December 20, 2016

The word “home” and the feelings and images associated with it are personal and meaningful to each of us.  The idea and imagery of “home” was powerful enough to inspire the words of Bertha Rafetto in what would become Nevada’s official state song, “Home Means Nevada”: “Way out in the land of the setting sun, Where the wind blows wild and free, There’s a lovely spot, just the only one that means home sweet home to me.”

Drawing from that sentiment, the Nevada Housing Division invited Clark County elementary school art teachers to enter student artwork for the 20th annual “Where I Live” School Arts Exhibition.  More than 1,700Clark County kindergarten through fifth grade students from 17 valley schools submitted artwork depicting where they live now or a place they would like to call home.

The entries were narrowed to 203works selected by a panel of judges. The juried pieces were put on display December 15th at the “Where I Live” exhibition and awards program held in the Veronese Ballroom at The Venetian where a group of more than 800 students, teachers, family members, sponsors and partners were gathered.

During the program awards were given for first, second and third place, along with 10 honorable mentions.  Recipients of first, second and third place awards were presented with a certificate, gift card and an art box.  The 10 honorable mention recipients were given a certificate and an art box. The award recipients will have their artwork featured in the 2017 Where I Live calendar distributed by the Nevada Housing Division.

This event was all win. A huge room full of proud parents and a memory of those kids making the walk to the stage, some a little shy and a few who owned the moment, and all of them clearly proud of themselves and happy to be recognized,” said Nevada Housing Division Deputy Administrator Tim Whitright.

The contest, exhibition and awards were made possible with the on-going support of community partners and sponsors including: Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Sands Cares, CCSD School-Community Partnership Program, Blick Art Materials and the Nevada Housing Division.
