Nevada Office of the Labor Commissioner awarded $510,539 federal apprenticeship expansion grant

Las Vegas, NV July 27, 2023

The Department of Labor has announced the latest round of Apprenticeship Expansion Grant awards as part of its State Apprenticeship Expansion Formula. The grant seeks to help states increase and expand apprenticeship opportunities in high-growth, high-demand industries. The Office of the Labor Commissioner (OLC) has received $510,539 to grow apprenticeship in Nevada.

As a result of this grant, the OLC, through the State Apprenticeship Council has awarded grant funds to the Culinary Academy Las Vegas (CALV) apprenticeship program for 5 years. The CALV program supports individuals in underserved communities through education, training, and employment in the culinary arts. The grant will have a positive impact on the number of apprenticeship opportunities available in this key industry.

With our state’s incredible diversity, fostering career training and connecting people to opportunities is vital for our community’s continued growth. This grant award enables awardees to pursue a career and obtain financial stability,” according to Nevada’s State Apprenticeship Director Toni Giddens.

Culinary apprentices work under a full-time certified chef instructor, are paid a competitive salary, and provided with uniforms and materials needed for their training.  These individuals are provided with an opportunity for certification in the culinary union upon completion of their apprenticeship and are expected to receive job offers with the many Las Vegas resorts that have partnered with the CALV.

The Culinary Academy apprenticeship program also gives back to the community through preparation and distribution of meals to elderly and low-income residents in Clark County, including supplying meals to community centers and others in need.
